Perimeter Fence plaque

Perimeter Fence plaque

Perimeter Fence (1995-present). What exactly is the purpose of the perimeter fence? According to founding burner Danger Ranger, the fence was originally built to act as a security barrier, preventing renegade burners from infiltrating the event without tickets. The Black Rock Historical Society has uncovered new insight into Fence history. According to county records, on August 23, 1994, a young man named Kevin 'Dust Gunner' Raich wandered off from the event after attending a shamen energy healing workshop at Astral Projection Camp. Convinced of his newfound abilities to shape-shift into animals, he roamed the desert thinking himself a wild fox. Found 3 days later near Elko, NV, he was returned to the event by a concerned dairy farmer. The first official fence was erected the following year. Does having a fence run counter to the spirit of Burning Man? Should there be boundaries for an event that claims to have no limits? You are free to theorize all you want, so long as you stay behind your orange plastic corral.
