Like many teenagers, when I was growing up I couldn't really figure out WHO I was supposed to be. I didn't have a favorite sport, or fashion sense, or any sort of coolness quotient... (my my how times have changed.)
When I was around 15 years old I was on a sort of mission to find a band or music group that I could call my "favorite". Before this particular quest, whenever anyone asked me what kind of music I liked, I'd just answer "Casey's Top 40". Seriously. You think that's a joke. It's not.
And it's such a loaded question. Your answer is going to be judged worthy or not worthy and I wanted to be able to give an answer that was at least TRUTHFUL, that I could believe in... even if it wasn't particularly cool. Anyways, I was searching for something that spoke to me, that I could cling to and integrate into my personality... and yes, allow me to have an answer to that interminable question.
Most kids I knew loved either the 80's heavy-metal hair bands or the Hank Williams Jr. country-type music that could be heard coming out of every truck that passed by on the highway, but neither of those styles did it for me.
Then one day I heard "The Neutron Dance" by The Pointer Sisters. I loved it. It was bouncy and energetic and it really made not a whole lot of sense. I was hooked. That led to "I'm So Excited", "Jump, For My Love", "Automatic". All off the same album. Then I thought, if I like this, I'll probably like their earlier stuff. Turns out they recorded Prince's "I Feel For U" long before Chaka Kahn did it. They'd also done several albums featuring the music of Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Remarkably, they were the first black women to perform at The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. (They might still hold some kind of record there, actually.)
They had so much musical talent that they showcased on album after album for years and years... but it took Neutron Dance, a stupid little song off of the soundtrack of Beverly Hills Cop, for them to get the national attention they deserved.
They were Ruth, Bonnie, and June.
You have one thing wrong, the popularity of "I'm so Excited" didn't occur until one special moment.
You should really credit all the fame and recognition of "I'm so Excited" to the tv show Saved by the Bell.
The placement of that song at such a special point when Jesse hit rock bottom after taking all those no-doz.
Dancing around...crying and stuff...all because she couldn't handle the pressure of the math test and dance squad at the same time. It really touched people very deeply. I know it turned my life around.
At that moment I knew I had to get off the "rock"....you know pop rocks. At that time I was really pushing things....pack of pop rocks here...downing it with a coke there. I am lucky to be alive..shoot, look what happened to Mikey the Life kid. It wasn't until Jesse's experience that I knew there was more out there for me.
What do I know....my name is Bubba!
