Got Game?

So those weird "Got Milk?" ads that have been running for the last few months finally make sense.  You know the ones I'm referring to, with the Eastern European look... where the family in rags is trying to get to a glass of milk?

It's all been a build up to this... a fun little online game where you roll a die and move along a kinda cool looking game board.  Don't try it without a mouse hooked up to your computer, it's impossible to steer the car without one.

What about Hillary, you say?

I've been watching the debates and listening to what the potential nominees have to say, and although I think Hillary would probably make a pretty damn good president (she's intelligent, cautious, diplomatic, respected, etc.) I think her candidacy would just take us back to the divisiveness we experienced when her husband was in office.  I like some of the other candidates, but the race seems like it's going to be between Hillary and Barack.  (Fingers crossed: I hope we don't get Edwards foisted upon us as a candidate like we did with John Kerry.  Edwards just seems way to swarmy to me.)

On top of being intelligent, cautious, diplomatic, respected, etc, Obama appears... well... honest, trustworthy, and willing to forge partisan gaps.

After 20 years of Bush, Clinton, Bush, I think we need to try something new.  This current see-saw ride we're on just ends up making everyone sick sooner or later.

Avenue Q

Last Friday my burner-brother Matt and I went to the Ahmanson downtown to see Avenue Q, which won the 2004 Tony award for Best Musical... and we've been entertaining/annoying everyone with little ditties from it ever since. (Matt even recorded one of the songs off of the internet and brought it out with us on Saturday night so we could sing-along to 'The Internet is for Porn'.) 

It's basically an adult version of Sesame Street crammed with grown-up themes like life after college, accepting your sexual orientation, one night stands (complete with puppet sex), and what has got to best the best manifestation of bad judgment I've ever seen... The Bad Idea Bears.

If you get a chance to see it while it's touring, don't miss it. You'll love it.  Here's the opening song as performed at the 2004 Tonys.

What are you saying, exactly?

Post burn stuff

I got a mention from my friend Ann Magnuson over on her blog at PaperMag.  She writes the "L.A. Woman" bits and incidentally, Ann will be performing on Saturday, Sept. 22nd in what is being billed as 'Dueling Harps' at the Steve Allen Theater.

My new friend Blue also posted an account of his experiences at Burningman and I quote:

While climbing around like the blissed out gibbon that I was, I had the chance to hang out with our camp mate, Kerry.

Kerry is such a source of warmth and comfortable energy, that you feel good everytime he smiles, which is often. He reminded me of being on a fourth grade playground when you are brand new and meet for the first time, your best friend for the rest of the year.

So there.  Suck on THAT, biatches!

Songs from the old country

I think I may have posted this before, but I just came across it again and it's a hoot.  I have no idea who the singer is... I'm not sure if the title that pops up is introducing him or the song and I don't even sure what language this is. (Russian?)

The tune is somewhat catchy and he's a winning and flamboyant performer... and a darn tootin' falsetto!  but check out the creepier elements of this production.  The string section is forced to play wearing hoods (???) ... and the -erm-... "chorus" is directed to... well... swoon.  You look at all of these elements together and just go "WTF??"

As an aside, this song reminds me of that great bit in "The Fifth Element" where the action is intercut with that greenish blue alien opera singer but maybe I think that only because I saw that movie when I was in Turkey.  (The title there was "5. güç" or "beş  güç" (pronounced 'besh gooch' which seemed Hilarious at the time... not so much now).   Anyway, they should have cast this guy.
